Hedgerow specializes in landscape designs that marry the elegantly cultivated with the comfortably natural.
Attention to detail
At Hedgerow we understand that achieving an exuberant, natural look requires thoughtful attention to color and texture.
Special events
Our naturalizing design style can be especially well-suited to plein-air events for a relaxed but festive atmosphere.
Hedgerow, the destination
In addition to landscape and garden design, Hedgerow is also headquarters to a retail nursery, extensive vegetable and perennials beds, a small gallery and a garden shop. Come wander our grounds Thursday through Sunday 10am to 5pm. Saturday mornings enjoy our vegetable market and delicious foods from Green Bean Catering.
Always experimenting
It's always a treat when we get artichokes to grow on the coast of Maine! Sometimes we just let them go to flower purely for their quirky visual appeal.
Rustic solutions
We enjoy working with twigs and other rustic materials to create fences, screens and furniture. At a retreat center on Long Island, Casco Bay, we created a way to screen the property from nearby houses that echoed the spruce woods and avoided the need to install an imposing, unfriendly fence.
Simple but pleasing transformations
At Hedgerow, a wild forested area separated the nursery from the gallery and garden shop. We groomed this area to create a pleasing passageway between the two sides of the property. Simple transformations like this are also a Hedgerow specialty.
Island work
Not surprisingly for landscape and garden designers on the coast of Maine, we have worked with a number of clients with island properties. In some cases, the only way to bring trees, shrubs, perennials and other materials to these sites is to use a barging service such as Sea Truk.
Mending construction sites
Nothing is more satisfying to us than to take a pockmarked construction site and settle it back into the surrounding landscape. This sloping site on Hupper Island is now a lush landscape of ferns, blueberries, and other native plantings.
Traditional mixed borders
We enjoy installing, developing and maintaining traditional, but slightly wild, mixed perennial/shrub borders at properties throughout midcoast Maine. This garden flourishes on an island near Port Clyde.
