What started as a family vegetable garden with a few raised beds has evolved into a production garden of around sixty raised beds along with some traditional in-ground growing areas. We use organic practices to grow produce for our market and hope to be certified eventually by MOFGA. Green Bean Catering joined forces with us in 2011, providing wholesome salads, spreads, entrees and desserts fresh from their off-the-grid kitchen on the other side of the peninsula. Additionally, we are now carrying specialty food products that complement the Green Bean and Hedgerow offerings, emphasizing local organic products (and a few Italian ones). The market is open Wednesday through Sunday, with extra breakfast offerings on Saturday mornings. Our season runs from Mother’s Day in May to Columbus Day in October.
Organically grown vegetables
In the Fall of 2013, Rob Lemire of Grapevine Hill Woodworking constructed a 12′ x 28′ post-and-beam structure for us. It is now our greenhouse where we start the vegetable seedlings we grow for our own produce as well as for sale. This beautiful and efficient new structure replaces the old small greenhouse we used for many years.
Year-round the greenhouse is home to our large and productive fig plant. Production starts in earnest in February with the first seedlings and micro greens. In March we get a jump on our often chilly spring season by growing some cooler weather crops in the protection of our three unheated hoop houses. When these crops are finished, we grow heat-loving summer crops such as tomatoes in the hoop houses.
Most of the Hedgerow property either has exposed rock ledge or is very wet (We are on the edge of a marsh!). As a result, almost all of our produce grows in raised beds.
Green Bean Catering
In 2011, India, John and Willow McConnochie started offering their fare at our regular markets. They are on hand Saturday mornings with their signature abundant and mouth-watering spread of coffee cakes, desserts, breakfast sandwiches, salads, appetizers and entrees. The rest of the week, Hedgerow customers are able to obtain refrigerated and frozen Green Bean fare. This includes an ever-changing and well-stocked array of salads, soups, appetizers, sandwiches, and entrees. Special orders are welcome.
Starting with tulips in the spring and running right through the last killing frosts of autumn we have an array of cut flower bouquets at the market. All of the flowers and foliage come from our gardens and surrounding woods.
We keep stockpiles of organic compost, loam and aged dark bark mulch on hand. The compost is the “Surf and Turf” blend from Benson Farm in Gorham, Maine and is MOFGA certified organic. We can deliver or load trucks with the bulk material. We continue to have a selection of garden tools, pots and ornaments as part of the market.
Seedlings and plants
We start all of the vegetables, annual flowers and herbs we grow at Hedgerow in our greenhouse. Many of these seedlings we also have for sale in the market in the spring and early summer.
